Tutorial June 15

The Evolving Role of the Post-Editor

Programme for the day

Change note (3.5.2023): the tutorial will be a full day, not a half day as previously scheduled. See announcement.

With continued advances in the quality of machine translation (MT), and the commodification of machine translation solutions, the role of the post-editor keeps evolving: the quality and degree of customization of the output, increasing numbers of integrations between MT solutions and CAT tools, changes in CAT tools, enhancing TM matches with MT, and more readily accessible performance metrics all impact the way in which professional linguists and other users engage with machine translation. Simultaneously, financial pressures are showing an increase in demand for MT-supported translation workflows, with some hoping to move to more human-in-the-loop workflows with a reduced need for human intervention.

In this context, we will host another tutorial on post-editing, following earlier versions hosted by Welocalize at the MT Summit in 2019 and AMTA 2021. In this tutorial for EAMT 2023 in Tampere, we want to revisit the practice of post-editing with speakers from academia and industry, all practitioners with hands-on experience in the task of post-editing, machine translation output evaluation, customizing models for post-editing, teaching and training post-editors, recruiting for post-editing and/or selling translation and post-editing services. The goal is to bring together different voices and experiences to explore recent advancements in MT and the status quo for translators, and to address questions on future forms of engagement: what does HITL (human in the loop) mean for post-editing? Should the engagement be (more) human centric? If so, how can we shape the user experience of (professional) linguists with MT?

With this year’s EAMT taking place in Finland, we are also including a focus on post-editing for the Nordics and Finnish in particular.
