Flying to Tampere

Tampere-Pirkkala International Airport is located only 15 minutes from Tampere city centre. Since the airport is small and efficient, travellers can be at their hotel 30 minutes after landing.

The airport hosts one of airBaltic’s four bases, and the airline offers direct flights from numerous European cities. airBaltic has codeshare with among others AirFranceBritish AirwaysKLMLufthansa and SAS.

The local bus 103 is the most convenient way to travel to Tampere. In the bus, you can pay with contactless payment (cash not accepted).

Flying to Helsinki

Helsinki Airport is Finland’s international air travel hub; over 150 direct flights from all over the world land daily in Helsinki. The airport is served especially well from Asian and European cities. Trains and buses between Helsinki Airport and Tampere run frequently. Helsinki Airport is a two-hour drive away from Tampere.

Travel from Helsinki Airport to Tampere by Train

  1. Go to the Airport Train Station
  • The train station is located directly beneath Helsinki Airport (Terminal 2).
  • Follow signs for “Railway Station” or “Trains” inside the terminal. Access is easy via escalators or lifts.
  1. Buy Tickets from Helsinki airport to Tampere
  • At ticket machines at the train station or online via the VR website or VR matkalla app
  • Prices usually between €20 and €40 (one way). The slowest trains are typically cheaper.
  1. Take a Commuter Train to Tikkurila
  • Board a P or I commuter train from the airport. No seat reservations on this train.
  • Trains run frequently, so no long waiting times. Travel to Tikkurila station (about 10 minutes).
  1. Change at Tikkurila to a Long-Distance Train
  2. Continue to Tampere
  • The train from Tikkurila to Tampere takes about 1 hour 20–50 minutes.
  • Trains run roughly every 30–60 minutes.

Travelling to Tampere by land and sea

International travel options to Helsinki, Finland include ferries from Tallinn, Estonia (2 – 3 hours), Stockholm, Sweden (overnight) and Travemünde/Lübeck, Germany (27 hours). There are also daily ferries between Turku and Stockholm (10 – 12 hours). Buses and trains from Helsinki to Tampere take under two hours.

The easiest way to get to Finland without flying is by taking a train from central Europe to Stockholm via Copenhagen. From Stockholm the journey continues to Turku, Finland by ferry. Direct trains from Port of Turku to Tampere take around two hours. The overnight ferry from Stockholm to Turku operated by Viking Line. Getting around in Tampere

Tampere is a compact city, and everything is within walking distance. If you want to go outside the city centre you can use our tram and bus services or citybike.
