14:05-15:00 Digitalizing the Supervision and Management of Academic Projects

Presenter: Laís Oliveira de Leite, Consultant, Eduix Itd

Room: B6-31b

In this session, we present international experiences on digitalizing the supervision and management of academic projects. Project-based learning is a core activity of education institutions. However, supervising and managing such academic projects are still challenging tasks for everyone involved: students, supervisors, and coordinators. When students start working on their academic projects, many think that it will be a linear process that will progress continually. Coordinators also expect that the communication between students and supervisors will be productive and well documented, allowing for students to meet their deadlines and for supervisors to be aware of students’ troubles. However, developing an academic project is a complex process, in which many deadlines are lost and supervisors are not aware of issues their students are facing. Digitalizing the supervision and management of academic projects streamlines the student writing process, supports systematic monitoring of student progress and supervisors’ work, and helps coordinators’ data-driven decision making.

The studies are designed for three years and are completed by a nationwide matriculation examination. The City of Tampere offers upper secondary education to about 3,500 day-high school students and about 550 adult high school students. There are six high schools for young people run by the city, one high school for adults, and five high schools run by other education providers.

High school curricula are profiled and emphasize specific subjects or groups of subjects. The Ministry of Education and Culture (OKM) has granted some of the curricular emphases a special national task. Visual arts and design, sports, music and musical theater, natural sciences, and IB teaching in English. On top of that our neighboring city, Ylöjärvi offers an entrepreneurship high school. Higher Education Institutions have the mission to interact with society and create an impact through education, research, and development. There is a need for identifying and monitoring societal interaction, impact, and regional development. All these also need to be implemented in a sustainable and responsible manner. Certain indicators have been used already for a long time, such as the number of publications, media hits, number of graduates, employment rates, etc. These are ways to measure the outcomes of our actions, but how well do these actually indicate the interaction, impact and development and how do they indicate sustainability. In this workshop the strategies and needs to monitor societal interaction and impact is discussed.
