Dress code

The dress code of the Conferment Ceremony festivities is based on academic traditions. This page details the dress codes at the different events.

Pre-Conferment Celebration (Friday 6 June)

ALL PARTICIPANTS

OPTION 1

For the Pre-Conferment Celebration, the dress code is a dark suit, either black or dark navy. Accessories: a white shirt, a tie that may be coloured/colourful, a white pocket square, no gloves, black lace-up shoes (not made of patent leather) and socks matching either the suit or shoes.

OPTION 2

A coloured/colourful long evening gown that may reveal the ankles. Accessories: matching court shoes, a small and dainty bag, no gloves. Real or costume jewellery and fashionable scarves may also be worn.

Conferment Ceremony and Procession (Saturday 7 June)

PROMOVENDIS AND HONORARY DOCTORS

  • All promovendis and honorary doctors must wear a doctor’s hat. The hat is put on at the Conferment Ceremony and also worn during the Procession and the Conferment Banquet. All attendees remove their doctor’s hats when entering the church. At the Secular Event, the doctor’s hat is worn throughout.
  • The sword remains attached to the attire during the Procession, the Church Service and the Secular Event.
  • No umbrellas, overcoats or handbags are worn during the Procession.

Promovendis and honorary doctors wear a tailcoat with a black waistcoat and white shirt. The tailcoat is paired with a white tie, black socks and black thin-soled lace-up shoes (not made of patent leather). No pocket squares or gloves. Wristwatches are not worn with a tailcoat. Tailcoat wearers may have a pocket watch with gold-coloured chains. Major decorations are worn.

OPTION 2

Promovendis and honorary doctors wear a black floor-length gown with a modest neckline and long sleeves, or a black suit and jacket set with a long skirt. The fabric must not be translucent. Promovendis wear black stockings or tights and black shoes. No prominent jewellery, furs, gloves or handbags are worn during the Conferment Ceremony, the Procession or the Church Service. Major decorations are worn.

PLUS ONES OF PROMOVENDIS AND HONORARY DOCTORS

OPTION 1

Plus ones wear a tailcoat with a black waistcoat and white shirt. The tailcoat is paired with a white tie, black socks and black thin-soled lace-up shoes (not made of patent leather). No pocket squares or gloves. Wristwatches are not worn with a tailcoat. Tailcoat wearers may have a pocket watch with gold-coloured chains.  Major decorations and a doctor’s hat (if any) are worn.

OPTION 2

Plus ones wear a dress with a modest neckline and long sleeves in black or another dark colour. The dress can be of any length, except ankle-length. No gloves. Black shoes. Small and dainty bag. Major decorations and a doctor’s hat (if any) are worn. Plus ones do not wear hats except for doctor’s hats (if any).

INVITED GUESTS, HOSTS, PROFESSORS AND OTHER TAMPERE UNIVERSITY STAFF

OPTION 1

Guests and audience members wear a tailcoat, like the promovendis and honorary doctors, or a black or dark navy suit instead of tails. Accessories for the suit: a white shirt, an understated silver or pearl grey tie, black lace-up shoes (not made of patent leather) and socks matching either the suit or shoes. No pocket squares or gloves. Wristwatches are not worn with a tailcoat. Tailcoat wearers may have a pocket watch with gold-coloured chains. Major decorations and a doctors’ hat (if any) are worn, along with doctoral regalia received from a university in another country, such as robes (if any).

OPTION 2

Guests and audience members wear a black or dark dress with a modest neckline and long sleeves that is at least knee-length but not ankle-length. No gloves. Black shoes. Major decorations and a doctors’ hat (if any) are worn, along with doctoral regalia received from a university in another country, such as robes (if any). Guests do not wear hats except for doctor’s hats (if any).

OTHER AUDIENCE

The Conferment Ceremony is a solemn occasion and the audience is expected to dress accordingly. Audience members wear dark festive attire but no pocket square, gloves, prominent jewellery or furs. Major decorations and a doctor’s hat (if any) are worn.

Conferment Banquet (Saturday 7 June)

PROMOVENDIS AND HONORARY DOCTORS

OPTION 1

Promovendis and honorary doctors wear a tailcoat with a white waistcoat and white shirt. The tailcoat is paired with a white tie, a white pocket square, black socks and black thin-soled patent leather lace-up shoes. Wristwatches are not worn with a tailcoat. Tailcoat wearers may have a pocket watch with gold-coloured chains. Major decorations and a doctor’s hat are worn for the Conferment Banquet, but no sword. No pocket square is worn with decorations. Gloves are allowed.

OPTION 2

Promovendis and honorary doctors wear a black floor-length evening gown with black evening shoes. The neckline may be open, and the gown may have short sleeves or no sleeves. Jewellery, a small bag and gloves are allowed. Major decorations and a doctor’s hat are worn for the Conferment Banquet, but no sword.

PLUS ONES OF PROMOVENDIS AND HONORARY DOCTORS

OPTION 1

Wristwatches are not worn with a tailcoat. Tailcoat wearers may have a pocket watch with gold-coloured chains. Major decorations (no pocket square is worn with decorations) and a doctor’s hat (if any) are worn. Gloves are allowed.

The dress code for the Conferment Banquet is a colourful (not black) floor-length evening dress and evening shoes. The neckline may be open, and the gown may have short sleeves or no sleeves. Jewellery, a small bag and gloves are allowed. Major decorations and a doctor’s hat (if any) are worn.

Garden Party (Sunday 8 June)

ALL PARTICIPANTS

The dress code for the Garden Party is smart casual, and the outfit may be colourful and, weather permitting, summery.  No gloves are worn. An upper secondary school graduation cap or an engineering student’s graduation cap is worn, if any.
