Super activist (kirkkovene, church boat rowing)

Recommendations and preparations

  • Please bring a towel (from the hotel) + swimwear + spare clothes if you want to have sauna afterwards at the rowing club!
  • A water bottle is strongly recommended.
  • Adjust your clothing according to the weather, but keep in mind that rowing is a strenuous exercise that generates a lot of heat.
  • You may also bring gloves, e.g., cycling gloves – they need to be thin + tight. But using bare hands is completely fine. One hour of rowing should not generate too severe blisters.

About the rowing event

  • We will all gather next to Tampere Hall after the Monday morning session & lunch. We’ll then walk together to the rowing site (about 15 min walk). Esa Räsänen (esa.rasanen@tuni.fi) is your host.
  • The rowing itself takes about 1 hour on the lake.
  • Two experienced rowers (one per boat) from the club (Takon Soutajat) will be your coxswains. They will guide you during the rowing. Esa will stay on the land with the other group (see below) and give also some basic instructions beforehand.
  • We are 56 people and will divide into two groups. Group 1 rows first with two boats (2 x 14 rowers). In the meanwhile, Group 2 will have a short tour in the nearby Arboretum and in the gym. After Group 1 is done we’ll switch. Then Group 1 can already go to sauna or enjoy the gym (or arboretum) for more exercise…
  • The sauna + rooms in the club are reserved for us until 5 pm.
  • Some simple refreshments (juice + bananas / protein bars / skyr…) will be provided so that you can survive until the dinner.
  • You can leave freely to your hotel or to the dinner site any time; but let’s see later how it goes –  it’s all relaxed after you’re done with your rowing job! 😊
  • Please note that you do not need to be super-fit to enjoy the activity!
