SS-Services

Special Session: Evolution and Impact of Modern GNSS Services

Organizers:

  • Antoine Grenier, OpenGNSS, Finland
  • Heidi Kuusniemi, Tampere University, Finland

Rationale and Scope:
Today Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) are an essential enabler for many applications. The wide adoption of this technology has pushed the development of new services for specific user cases aim to solve the challenges rising from the new usages of satellite positioning navigation and timing (PNT) solution. For example, the new spoofing/jamming threats that have been rising in the recent years [1] has led to the development of new authentication services, with Galileo OSNMA, Galileo SAS or GPS CHIMERA, as a direct answer to these threats.

The new services highlight a significant transformation in satellite navigation paradigms. Previously focused solely on providing global positioning solutions, GNSS now extends beyond just positioning, to offer more reliable, trustworthy, resilient, and precise services. In addition to PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) services, GNSS now encompasses Search and Rescue capabilities as part of the COSPAS-SARSAT system. Furthermore, the Galileo system includes an emergency warning service (EWS), illustrating GNSS’s expanded role beyond PNT to include vital emergency communication functions. The new services are enabled also by the new generation satellites having more powerful and flexible payload.

This session addresses the evolving landscape of GNSS technologies that significantly impact navigation applications. Additionally, we aim to provide a policy perspective by incorporating insights from the European Commission (EC), the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), and the European Space Agency (ESA), offering a comprehensive view on the future direction of GNSS services as well as user perspectives and needs.

We have drafted up an non-exhaustive list of GNSS services is to provide additional examples of current and foreseen modern GNSS services:

  • GNSS Authentication Services (e.g, GPS CHIMERA, Galileo OSNMA, Galileo SAS);
  • GNSS High Accuracy Services (e.g, Galileo HAS, BeiDou PPP-B2b, QZSS CLAS);
  • Emergency Services (e.g, Galileo SAR, BeiDou SAR, BeiDou SMC);
  • Integrity (ARAIM, T-RAIM, RRAIM);
  • Timing services and timing distribution (e.g. Galileo, Iridium);
  • Beyond GNSS additional sensors and new constellations;

The session focuses on papers with one or multiple of the following research angles:

1. Reviewing the services current and future developments;
2. Assessing the advantages of the new services for users, while also identifying the challenges and gaps in user adoption.
3. Evaluating the foreseen impacts of the new services evolutions for the users.
