From Thesis to Professional Profile – How to Make Your Competence Visible to Employers
Venue: City centre campus, Linna Building, K113
What does your master’s thesis say about you as a professional? And how can you use it to strengthen your job search and build your professional profile in Finland?
In this lecture, you will learn
- how to identify the value of your thesis and expertise you have developed and
- how to communicate them clearly and convincingly to employers
You will gain practical tools for translating your research topic, thesis process, and findings into competencies that are valued in working life, as well as making the impact of your thesis visible.
During the session, you will reflect on your own professional profile and explore questions such as: What kind of professional am I becoming? What skills have I gained through my thesis? Who could benefit from my expertise?
This session offers insights into how academic expertise can be presented effectively in the Finnish labour market. In a rapidly changing world of work, employers increasingly value the ability to understand complex phenomena, analyse information, and develop solutions. Your thesis is not just a research project – it is an important part of your professional story. This workshop is designed for master’s students at all stages of the thesis process. Whether your thesis is already completed, just an idea in your mind, or anywhere in between, you are welcome to join.
The session is particularly useful if you need a boost to complete your thesis, are currently looking for a job, or are in a situation where you need to be able to talk about your thesis and its relevance to others. It will help you identify the value and expertise your thesis demonstrates and communicate them confidently to employers and professional networks. Be prepared for some practical work, and to talk about your thesis in pairs/small gropus.
The session will be led by Heini Hult-Miekkavaara, Career Services Expert and Career Coach at Social Science Professionals. Heini has extensive experience in career services and career counselling, having worked both in trade unions and at the University of Helsinki. Her particular interests include the sustainability transformation and its implications for careers and work.
Please register here until 18.10.2026.
