About the seminar series
Semiosis and translation are irremediably linked to each other. Any translatory effort has to account for the semantic contents, contexts, and interpretative habits that define the meaning of the matter being translated. On the other hand, translation, with its many nuances, is a key concept in many semiotic theories and approaches, often described as a mechanism underlying all forms of communication. Different kinds of semiotic processes and systems intermingle in translation, and translational dynamics inform their interaction.
With this event, we wish to encourage dialogue and reflection on the relations between the two, as well as closer collaboration between the disciplines of semiotics and translation studies.
Upcoming event
The event will be held on 5 November 2025 at Tieteiden talo in Helsinki. It will involve a doctoral consortium, where PhD students can get feedback on their project from a panel of experienced mentors, as well as a seminar with presentations and discussions by renowned experts in both fields. Invited speakers include Piotr Blumczynski, Ritva Hartama-Heinonen, and Eero Tarasti.
The event will also lead into a special issue of Synteesi (Jufo 1) on the theme of the event, edited by Mattia Thibault and Riku Haapaniemi. Anyone taking part or interested in the event is invited to propose a paper to the special issue. A call for papers with more information will be disseminated later.
