PhD Seminar on Research Methods and Ethics

The PhD Seminar focuses on the practices of research methods and ethics. The speakers include experts from the academic ethics committee as well as senior researchers, who share their own experiences on various research methods and how they have dealt with ethical issues. PhD students can present the methods they use in their PhD thesis and get peer support for their questions about how research ethics can be incorporated into their own research.

Workshop pre-assignment

We would like to invite you to do a short preparation that will enrich our collective learning experience.

  1. Choose ONE research method you use regularly or find particularly interesting.
  2. Fill in this short online form [link] by 27 October about your method including a short description on:
    • What the method is (max 30 words).
    • Why you use it (max 50 words).
    • One challenge or insight you have had with the method (max 50 words).
    • One ethical point or challenge regarding the method (max 50 words).
  3. Bring with you a visual, material or symbolic representation of your method:
    • A diagram, image, metaphor or an object that helps others understand the method
    • You can bring it printed, digitally, or as a material object (we’ll have a shared board)
  4. Reflection – Think about:
    • What methods from other disciplines intrigue you?
    • What do you hope to learn from others?
  5. We’ll use your input to build a shared Methods Map and spark discussion during the workshop.

The PhD Seminar is free and meant for the participants of both the ATUT Symposium and Re-City Conference. Note that there are maximum of 40 places for registered PhD students. Registration is made via ATUT+Re-City registration form, and the places will be filled in the registration order. The registration is now closed.

Coffee and snacks during the seminar are provided by the TURNS Research Platform and the Association of Spanish Scientists in Finland (ACEFI). The lunch at the Juvenes YO restaurant is at one’s own cost.
