Congratulations to the MET Award winners 2025!

Best Publication Awards
This year, the faculty exceptionally expanded the Best Publication category to include four winners! The awards were presented by the Vice Dean for Research Minna Kellomäki (not in the photo). The awards were received by the first authors (names in the same order as the people in the photo): Prof. (emer.) Pekka Karhunen, Doctoral Researcher Antti Kiviaho, Dr. Sonya Ghanavati, and Postdoctoral Research Fellow Jutta Laiho. Links in the authors’ names take you to the publications.

Education Awards
The winners of the education award were Professor Jonathan Massera (Biomaterials Science), University Lecturer Elina Mäntylä (Biosciences), and Clinical Instructor Ilkka Rauma (Neurology). In the photo are the Vice Dean for Education, Nina Hutri, who presented the awards, along with Jonathan and Elina.

MET Best Doctoral Theses

Doctor of Science (Technology) Kyriacos Yiannacou, Machine Learning Based Acoustic Manipulation of Particles and Droplets inside Microfluidic Devices
Doctor of Philosophy, Giusy del Giudice, Navigating Complexity – Multiscale Models of Responses to Environmental Exposures: Towards a One Health Paradigm
The awards were presented by Education Manager Henna Mattila (not in the photo). Giusy and Kyriacos, who were unable to attend, sent a video greeting, and their awards were received by their supervisors, Prof. Dario Greco (for Giusy) and Prof. Veikko Sariola (for Kyriacos). Events

The three-day event kicked off with the Industrial Pre-Event, attracting roughly 120 participants, including both MET researchers and industry representatives. Organized with Business Tampere, the event on “Health AI, Digital Twins & Chip Twins” brought together representatives from 19 companies, from global industry leaders to our faculty’s spin-offs. Participant feedback placed the pre-event neck-and-neck with the 10-minute research presentations, slightly edging them out in the average ratings, highlighting its popularity.

The program included three engaging keynote presentations. The photo brings together all three speakers: Prof. Frank Bradke (DZNE), who spoke on Mechanisms of Axon Growth and Regeneration; Associate Professor Erik Groot Jebbink (University of Twente & Rijnstate Hospital), who presented Technical Medicine: The Key to Personalized Medicine; and Associate Professor Riku Klén (University of Turku), who discussed Automatic Cancer Detection from Medical Tomography Images Using Artificial Intelligence.

This year’s commercial exhibition included 29 companies. Exhibitors welcomed the earlier timing of the event, and 59% of respondents to the attendee survey also preferred late October over the previous late-November schedule.

Over the course of two days, nearly 150 posters were on display, offering plenty of interesting insights. The old library spaces of Arvo proved to be a good choice for the exhibition — we will be making use of this space again in the next implementation!

Translating scientific results into practical applications is a key part of research. During the coffee breaks, this aspect of the faculty’s work was highlighted, with a focus on commercialization. The sessions featured six Research to Business (R2B, funded by Business Finland) projects at various stages of development, as well as one Proof of Concept (POC) project funded by the Research Council of Finland.
