Emerging Communication Technologies for Augmented Future-Beings

The Workshop on Emerging Communication Technologies for Augmented Future-Beings will be organized during the IEEE Global Communications Conference, 7-11 December 2020 // Taipei, Taiwan

About the workshop

Recently, a lot of research efforts have been carried out in the area of emerging paradigms of the Internet of Nano Things and the Internet of Bio-Nano Things for cyber-physical environment and contribution towards Augmented Human and Future-Beings. These topics have already attracted significant attention within the research community and are currently ramping up on the commercial interest. The future will take this to the next level, and this includes implanting miniature devices that are implanted deep into a body to achieve even higher integration of alive substance and a digital world – digital copies of humans in supercomputers that can simulate human bodies and animals and provide deep insights into the current conditions as well possible new forms of treatments. In this context, a newly formed communications technologies agenda is expected to arise. Already now there are many studies performed addressing various communications challenges including data transmission for various implantable, human-machine interfaces, novel communication architectures, etc.

The ultimate goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers from diverse disciplines to facilitate interdisciplinary research on the topic of human augmentation. The workshop aims to attract industry and academics from the following areas but is not limited to:

  • Communication aspects of augmented human including wireless networking, new communication methods (e.g., conductive invisible tattoos), enabling “plug and play” approach for the devices, interaction with smart city infrastructure
  • Biointegrated (invasive) electronics
  • AI-aided data analysis for cognitive augmentation
  • Human-machine interaction, including new interfaces (e.g., smell interface, haptic interface), interface design for different groups of users (e.g., different age groups use technology in ways that differ a lot from each other)
  • Future Brain-machine interface enabled by AI
  • Engineered tissues and organs with integrated communication
  • Future Internet of Bio-Nano Things solutions to detect infectious diseases
  • Engineering animals communication systems to cope with climate change

The workshop will be organized during IEEE Globecom 2020.
