About the seminar

The seminar Communication Studies Locally and Globally is organised to honour Professor Emeritus Kaarle Nordenstreng who celebrated his 80th birthday in the summer of 2021. The seminar examines the place of Finnish communication studies relative to international research and discusses the future of the field.

Journalism and mass communication, currently journalism, media and communication studies, have always been at the core of Tampere University. Kaarle Nordenstreng — who was appointed to his professorship in 1971 — has been the face of communication studies in both Finland and internationally. With his actions and networks, he has supported the internationalisation of hundreds of researchers and paved the way for international collaborations.

Kaarle Nordenstreng still conducts research and cooperates internationally. He is leading a study that canvasses news reporting on the war in Ukraine in Chinese, Finnish and Russian media.

The keynote speech is given by Professor Nico Carpentier, President of IAMCR. The view to communication studies is further augmented by the video greetings of 12 international scholars.

The seminar is open to all. No registration is required. The seminar will be broadcast online. Join Zoom Meeting https://tuni.zoom.us/j/8646819944
