What’s Possible for Social Psychology? – Knowledge, Practice and Implementation

With the risk of repeating a cliché, the times we are living in could be described as an era of accelerating change and interconnected problems. It has become apparent that solving the world’s crises, big or small, cannot rely solely on technical, economic, or juridical solutions. Instead, solutions are always social, demanding an understanding of human sociality and the dynamics between people and groups. At the same time, changes in the technological environments we live in and the evolving social fabric of society raise an important question: how can we best understand the world around us, and how can this knowledge be used to build and maintain a sustainable way of life?

The theme of The Annual Finnish Social Psychology Conference 2026, “What’s Possible for Social Psychology? – Knowledge, Practice and Implementation” invites all those curious about social psychology to explore these questions. The theme can be read in (at least) two ways. First, in a world of interconnected phenomena, there is a need for approaches that reach beyond established disciplinary boundaries. This raises the question: what phenomena can be researched through social psychological lenses, where are the limits of social psychology, and what happens when we reach those limits? Second, it is crucial not only to understand but also to use social psychological knowledge to improve life locally and globally. Thus, we ask: how is knowledge transformed into meaningful change in thinking and action among individuals, groups, organisations, and societies at large?

We welcome all social psychologists and scholars in related fields to examine both the boundaries and applicability of social psychological understanding!
