Conference Details

Welcome

The International Research Society for Public Management (IRSPM) has grown out of a highly successful series of annual conferences.

At the ninth conference, held at Bocconi University in 2005, the conference attendees agreed that a proposal would be developed to formalise this emerging network of researchers and to establish IRSPM. This idea was unanimously accepted at the tenth conference held at Glasgow Caledonian University in April 2006.

The Society’s mission is to develop and support research about public management and public policy implementation amongst the international research community and to facilitate the creation and dissemination of new knowledge and understanding across this community.  IRSPM will achieve its mission by accomplishing the following objectives:

  • Creating and supporting an international network of researchers in the areas of public management and public policy implementation that emphasizes multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research.
  • Wherever possible, encouraging and supporting research, and especially cross-national and comparative research, that illuminates the nature of public management and public policy implementation in an international context.
  • Organising an annual conference to disseminate new research findings and theory about public management and public policy implementation.
  • Supporting the dissemination of these new research findings and theory both through the adopted journal of the Society (Public Management Review) and by establishing other publication and research dissemination processes (such as special editions of other journals, edited books, workshops, etc.).
  • Facilitating the renewal of the international research community by supporting new and emerging researchers, and researchers from the developing and transitional nations, and by facilitating their introduction into the research community around public management and public policy implementation.
  • Pro-actively seeking out alliances (both one-off and on-going) with other national, regional and international scientific associations in order to further the mission of the Society and of public management and policy.

IRSPM Conference 2020 – Tampere, Finland

Following Birmingham 2015, Hong Kong 2016, Budapest 2017, Edinburgh 2018, and Wellington 2019, the XXIV conference in 2020 will be hosted by the Faculty of Management and Business, Tampere University in Finland.

The average number of delegates attending the conference is between 500–700 and while certain regions (Europe and North America) tend to be more represented at the conference, it is truly global in terms of attendees, topics and outlook.

In addition to the academic activities of the conference, the conference seeks to integrate local communities of public sector practitioners and other stakeholders through specially designated practitioner panels, international speakers and the chance to network with a global community of scholars.

The theme of the 2020 conference is ‘Smart public services?’ The Faculty of Management and Business at Tampere University invite you to be part of this unique conference and look forward to your participation and support.
