Registration
Inclusive Cities Hackathon 2022 utilizes Ultrahack’s platform for registration. You’ll be asked some background information which may help us in finding a team for you – in case you don’t have team ready. The teams may have a varying number of people.
Please click here to be forwarded to the registration platform. Sign up and click Apply to Hackathon. If you are a team leader, choose Create a Team. In any other case, click Join a Team. You can also select one or more of the challenges you’re interested in.
Note: if you’re creating a team, you’ll be asked to create a project submission in the process and describe your solution. These fields are not so relevant in Inclusive Cities Hackathon, you can write something you have in mind or just put “to be found out later” for the mandatory fields.

Participation and Registration
1. Who can participate?
Higher education students studuing in Finnish universities or universities of applied sciences.
2. Can I participate online?
Yes. The kick-off online meeting link and Teams-invitation for remote communication throughout the hackathon will be sent to your email address (the one you used when registering). We encourage however to come onsite for the kick-off.
3. Where do I register?
We use Ultrahack’s platform in Inclusive Cities Hackathon, so at Ultrahack’s website. Direct link here.
4. Do I have to register, if I want to participate?
Yes.
5. I need to travel from Lahti/Kuopio/Seinäjoki/Helsinki/Vantaa to Tampere for the kick-off and face-to-face meetings. Do you reimburse travelling costs?
Unfortunately no. Remote participation is totally allowed though – it is mostly up to you and your team how you arrange your work.
6. I don’t have a team. Can I still register and participate?
Absolutely yes. We will create teams for those who do not have one already.
7. Ho many people there are in a team?
2-4.
8. I want to participate with a friend. Can we be in the same team?
Absolutely yes. When registering, one of you registers as a team leader, and the other one then joins that team.
9. We are signing up as a team. In registration, there is a mandatory part that says “Create a project submission”. What to put there?
If you would (from some miraculous reason) have a solution in mind already, this part would help us organizers to find better support for you. They are not so relevant in Inclusive Cities Hackathon, you can write something you have in mind or just put “to be found out later” for the mandatory fields.
Teamwork during the hackathon
1. Where do I start with my team?
You’ll be invited to a Teams platform, which has a channel for each of the challenges with challenge descriptions and data. That would be a good place to start.
2. Where do I get help?
The kick-off event is a good place to get general understanding. Other than that, please utilize the Teams and post your question there – we have sevaral people monitoring the channels. We’d hope that this way, other participants would get the information as well.
3. How much work I need to do?
It is up to you and your team. We understand that students have other obligations and arranging time for additional teamwork is not easy, that’s why we have a four-week window for you to do your work. You’re not expected to work for four weeks.
Submissions
1. When is the submission deadline?
Sunday November 13th, 23:59 EET.
2. Where do we submit?
In the hackathon Teams platform, there will be a specific channel for submissions.
3. What do we submit?
A max. 5 minute video of your solution (or a link to a video). In the video, you present your solution and the reasoning behind it, but the style is free.
4. Who owns our submission?
You – the makers – own it. You maintain all the rights to the stuff you do as a team.
5. Are the videos public? Will you be using them somewhere?
They are not public and will be used in evaluations by the Jury. You may however be asked if you allow your video (or parts of it) to be used in some other informational purposes.
6. Can I get credits (ECTS) from this?
Maybe, but you need to consult your thesis supervisor or some other suiting teacher about this. The hackathon organizers cannot hand out credits.
Prizes
1. Prize pool is 7500 €. Does that mean the winning Team will get 7500 €?
No. 7500 € is the total amount of money that is distributed among the winners of the challenges. The prize money may depend on the quality of the submissions – i.e. be higher for more qualified winners.
2. On what basis are the submissions evaluated?
The submission criteria were published on Oct 17th. They can be found from the Schedule & Challenges section.
3. Besides money, are there any other perks?
There is the great possibility of getting acknowledged with cutting-edge data tools and making new friends. Additionally, each of the challenge winners will get a follow-up meeting, where the utilization possibilities of the winning work are discussed with the challenge partners.
4. Who decides the winners?
Juries, which consist of representatives from the challenge partner organizations and Microsoft. The juries will be published on Oct 17th Oct 31st.
5. How is the money distributed among team members?
You, as a team, decide. It may be evenly or then depended on the work input. You’ll be asked this when it is time.
6. When will I get the prize money?
The online prize ceremony will be held on Friday 18th, and the winning teams will be announced in hackathon Teams. The winners will be contacted by email, and prize money should be in your account asap after that.
