Tampere University organises all faculties’ joint conferment ceremony on 12–14 August 2022
The ceremonial conferment of doctoral degrees is the highest and most prestigious academic celebration and a tradition that spans several centuries. The new Tampere University will hold its first conferment ceremony in August 2022.
The event is meant for doctoral graduates from the new Tampere University and for those doctoral graduates from Tampere University of Technology and the University of Tampere who have not yet participated in a conferment ceremony. The first honorary doctors of the new Tampere University will also be inaugurated at the ceremony.
“Promootio”, the Finnish word for the conferment, comes from the Latin verb “promovere”, which means promotion, advancement, and elevation. The purpose of the conferment ceremony is to highlight the value of and respect for research and education. It is also a unique way to celebrate academic achievements.
The three-day conferment celebrations include several events organised mainly at Tampere Hall. A preliminary event is organised on Friday 12 August and it also includes a rehearsal of the conferment act. The main event, the ceremonial conferment of doctoral degrees, will be organised on Saturday 13 August. After the conferment act, the doctors and honorary doctors form a procession to walk to Tampere Cathedral for a service. The festivities continue in the evening with the conferment banquet. A garden party organised on Sunday 14 August will conclude the celebrations.
Participants in the conferment events undertake to comply with the pandemic guidelines in force at the time of the event.
